Skincare Routine Steps Should Be Chosen By Climate, Not Skin Type

Popular thought has always been that we should choose our skincare routine steps based upon our skin type—whether your skin is dry, oily, normal, or a mix of all three, a.k.a., combination. Well, it’s time to forget all that.

It turns out that those skin issues are really just symptoms of something bigger: the climate. The weather and environment you live in (or travel to) has a direct effect on how your skin looks and behaves. As the climate changes, so does your skin. Your complexion might be oily when it’s hot and humid outside, but then flaky and dehydrated in a frigid cold locale. That’s because high heat and humidity increases oil production. In a polar climate, however, lack of moisture in the air translates to a lack of moisture in skin. So, how do we account for these changes in climate—and in your skin? Simple: embrace skincare routine steps designed to support skin based on the environment around you. That’s where Pour Moi Skincare comes in—the world’s first climate-smart skincare line. Each product contains hydrators and other skin-nourishing ingredients carefully selected to balance skin in every environment.

So, what should your climate-smart skincare routine steps look like? Start here.

Cleanse

If you live in low-humidity polar or desert climate, wash your face with a gentle, creamy cleanser. Such cleansers get skin clean without stripping natural oils and drying skin out more. If you live in a high-humidity, hot and sticky tropical location, your skin can probably handle a stronger foaming formula. Rinse well and pat dry.

Balance

After cleansing, balance skin’s pH and prepare it to receive hydrators and anti-aging ingredients. Accomplish this with the Hydrating Balancer—in any climate. Citric acid and sodium hydroxide tweak skin’s pH so it’s just right. Glycolic fruit acids clear pore-clogging, complexion-dulling dead skin, and glycerin keeps skin’s water levels in check. Now your skin is ready for some active ingredients.

Nourish

Serums offer highly concentrated ingredients in a silky, lightweight formula meant to be layered under your day and night cream. Pour Moi offers two: If you live in a tropical or temperate climate and have skin on the oilier side, choose the White Serum. It contains peptides, antioxidants, vitamins A, C, and E and humectants such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin to keep moisture levels balanced. The Black Serum contains all that, but is ideal for dehydrated skin in polar and desert climates because of its emphasis on hydration. Squalane absorbs deeply into parched skin.

Moisturize

This is where the climate-smart technology really comes into play. Each day cream in the Pour Moi line was designed to balance skin in one of the four major climates: Tropical (hot and humid), Desert (hot and dry), Temperate (mild), and Polar (cold and dry). All of the day creams contain HylaTurf+, a proprietary complex that contains three sizes of hyaluronic acid to effectively hydrate skin in different temperatures and humidity levels. Other brands take a one-size-fits-all approach with one standard sized hyaluronic acid molecule, but it’s not always effective in different humidity levels. They also contain Climate Energized Beautifiers (CEBs): humectants and active ingredients tailored to one of the four specific climates, so you’re getting exactly what your skin needs. All of the day creams also contain a blend of antioxidants, peptides, and white truffle to protect against skin aging caused by free radicals unleashed by UV rays and pollution.

Restore

While the Day Creams are designed to hydrate and ward off damage, the Night Cream is formulated to support skin through its repair process. Seaweed extract revs up microcirculation, increasing blood flow and cell regeneration. Vitamin A boosts collagen production for smoother skin, and fights off free radical damage incurred during the day.
