The skin is composed of many layers, which have their own layers — talk about a skinception! Learn more about the journey of skincare.
Beauty is Not Skin Deep, But Skincare is.
The brilliance of skincare is that it’s a shot of beauty and health all in one beautiful bottle. Instead of enduring endless cosmetic procedures and taking bottomless multivitamins for skin health, premium skincare has you naturally covered. The first of its kind, Pour Moi skincare has a specialty for multitasking, promoting skin appearance and overall well-being while balancing external factors like climate and pollution. There’s so much more to you than what’s on the surface, metaphorically and physically. This is why skincare goes as deep as it can without penetrating through the skin barrier — that would technically make it a drug like sunscreen. As you apply your skincare products to the outer surface of the skin, it’s hydrating, nourishing, and anti-aging effects trickle down, supporting millions of skin cells and promoting a
healthy skin barrier without passing through it.
Getting to Know Your Skin Layers
The skin has three major layers, but skincare doesn’t reach the deepest two. The hypodermis, the deepest layer, composes the bridge to the internal structures. This connective layer is responsible for appending the skin to the rest of the body, regulating body temperature, and storing fat — but don’t be quick to judge! — this padding on your muscles and bones is for your protection. Meanwhile, the middle layer, called the dermis, is busy giving you the feels with nerve endings that stimulate the senses. The dermis also regulates blood flow through the skin, which can remove toxins through the vessels. Together, the dermis and hypodermis focus on what’s on the inside rather than what’s on the outside — isn’t that admirable? The epidermis, the outermost layer of skin, is where all the skincare excitement happens. Although the epidermis is about as thick as a sheet of paper, it further diverges into five horizontal layers that band together to create new skin cells and protect the body from external irritants. As the body’s first line of defense, the epidermis is equipped with distinct immune cells that promote skin and body health.
Just like the epidermis, skincare strives to boost your health and protect you. [Keep reading: Beautiful Skin Begins with a Healthy Skin Barrier]
Out With the Old, In With the New
With the millions of dead skin cells being shed to make way for new ones, skincare travels between them. The Stratum Corneum is a layer within the epidermis, and it has its own structure made of a lipid bilayer that acts like glue and holds the dead skin cells together. This is where skincare latches on and enjoys the ride for as long as it can. As not all skincare is made equally, not all skincare is absorbed as deeply. The depth of skincare into the epidermis depends on the formulation. Because the Stratum Corneum is held together by lipids, skincare with a lipid base will travel further than that of a water base. Water is the first ingredient in any skincare and will be rapidly absorbed in the upper layers of the epidermis if not accompanied with oil-based
functional ingredients, such as coconut oil or squalane oil, that are able to reach deeper layers. Lipids get a bad reputation for being associated with fat, but skincare, and therefore skin, gets its hydration from water and its moisture from oils. The varying climate smart Day Creams in the Pour Moi Réponse du Climatâ collection contain a mixture of
pure French water and beneficial oils, allowing skincare to absorb into deeper layers of the upper epidermis. Carried by lipid friendly functional ingredients, the anti-aging and moisturizing ingredients in Pour Moi percolate through the layers in part due to the small molecule size.
